| About Therapeutic | |||
Therapeutic Supervision is supervised visitation with the addition of feedback from a trained, licensed mental health professional |
|||
| It is not therapy , but rather a way to incorporate many of the techniques of parenting education programs, filial therapy, and play therapy into the supervised visitation format. The supervisor not only observes the interactions between parent and child, but also offers constructive feedback and support to the parent in order to assist the parent in improving the interactions with their child. This can lead to an improved level of parent-child interactions, as well as increasing the trust and self-confidence of the child involved. It also serves as a way in which the child can work through conflict and be heard in a safe environment | |||
| Who Can Benefit | |||
|
Therapeutic supervision is not appropriate for every family, and careful consideration should be given by attorneys and courts before authorizing this service. |
|||
| This service is most helpful when the parent has the ability to acknowledge their contributions to the family situation that may have necessitated supervised visitation | |||
Denial of events and/or denial of the feelings the child may be experiencing could be highly detrimental to the process of improving the interaction between the parent and child. Parents who are struggling to take accountability for behaviors may be better served by enrolling in individual therapy in order to address the presenting problems |
|||
| Parents who are open to feedback regarding their interactions with their children are most likely to benefit from TS | |||
| Goals | |||
| Through the feedback provided during therapeutic supervised visitation a parent will be offered help to: | |||
| Develop increased understanding of their child | |||
| Learn about play and emotions from a child centered, non-directive point of view | |||
| Learn new skills, such as limit setting, for positive parenting results | |||
| Improve communication with their child | |||
| Boost self confidence as a parent | |||
| Increase feelings of trust between parent and child | |||
| Reduce frustrations | |||
| This service can help parents to better understand their children and form closer and more connected relationships. Like all supervised visitation, therapeutic supervised visits are child directed. Therefore, during a session a child may choose to play, draw, talk, or remain silent | |||
| Why Therapeutic Supervision Works | |||
| Therapeutic supervision is based on the filial play therapy model, which has been well researched over the last four decades. Research has shown that filial therapy works with a wide range of families, and that progress children and parents make in filial therapy tends to be long lasting | |||
| While therapeutic supervision is more expensive than basic observational supervision, it is hoped that the feedback and training provided can assist parents in dealing with both short and long term goals and help improve the parent child relationship | |||
